Summaries

Short summary

Tested with LD/dyslexia reading tool for accessibility. The visual adjustments and read aloud tests results are contained in another evaluation.

Long summary

There is no right-hand vertical scroll bar when using the Readium cloud reader in the Chrome OS, unlike the way it functions in a Windows environment. This issue will mostly impact users who prefer a continuous scroll view as they would have to use the arrow keys to scroll page content. However, navigating the settings window requires one to arrow or tab down the selections. This method of screen navigation may be cumbersome for users who typically use a mouse.
Users must create an account on https://web.hypothes.is/ and login in order to insert and save annotations or highlighted text.
When using media overlays, users are advised to set Readium's layout scroll mode to "Auto." Otherwise the media overly recording will lock up during page navigation and the browser must be refreshed to resume the recording.

Cumulative Score 53.8%

Basic Functionality

4/4
Operating system accessibility Supported
Reading system activation Supported
Open content Supported Book must be sideloaded to add to cloud reader library.
Listing documents Supported To hear book titles read before selection, use the "hover speech" tool in the R&W toolbar. The Readium library does not support title sorting or searches.

Navigation

2/5
Not Tested
Supported There is no go to page function in Readium, but users can navigate to specific pages by using the page list at the end of the table of contents in the test book.
Supported
Not Supported There is no type of "where am I?" command in the reading system. The only way a user can tell where they are in the book is through visual inspection or reading the page number and headings with R&W. However, this method is likely fine for most R&W users.
Not Supported There is no type of search function in cloud reader other than Chrome's own "find" command. This method searches only through the book chapter currently loaded. It does not search the entire book.

Highlights, Notes, and Bookmarks

1/4
Add a Bookmark or Highlight Not Tested Only highlights are supported by the Readium cloud reader. Users must create an account on https://web.hypothes.is/ and login in order to insert and save highlighted text.
Review and navigate Bookmarks or Highlights Not Supported Users can review the sections of highlighted text within the hypothesis sidebar. However, there is no way to automatically navigate to these sections within the book itself. Further, R&W cannot read any of the text in the hypothesis sidebar.
Add a note Supported Users must create an account on https://web.hypothes.is/ and login in order to insert and save a note. However, R&W cannot read user created notes in the hypothesis sidebar.
Review and navigate Notes Not Supported Notes can be reviewed in the hypothesis sidebar, but there is no way to navigate to these sections within the book itself. If a tag is also set while creating the note, there is a function to "visit annotation in context," but during testing this simply hung up and never loaded.

Non-Visual Reading

Feature Test Result Notes
Cumulative Score 84.6%

Non-Visual Reading

11/13
Initiate "read from here" Supported Continuous reading beyond the current screen view is only available when layout is set to continuous scroll. It should be noted that R&W does not automatically scroll the page view as reading continues. User must manually scroll the page using the right arrow key.
Stop and resume reading Supported
Proper reading order Supported
Image alternate text reading Supported
Change reading speed Supported
Pauses in TTS reading Supported
Navigation in table Not Supported R&W reads tables in the same way it reads text. There is no provision for any other way to read table information. It is unlikely that the typical R&W user would want to do this. One can read individual cells in any order, however, by manual selection.
Navigation between internal hyperlinks Supported
Move to the next block item Supported With Read&Write this is done by selecting the next block item one wants to read and then clicking on "play" in the R&W toolbar.
Navigate by characters Supported With Read&Write this is done by unchecking "continuous reading" box in the speech options settings. Then the user selects individual characters one at a time while clicking on "play" in the R&W toolbar.
Navigate by words Supported With Read&Write this is done by unchecking "continuous reading" box in the speech options settings. Then the user selects individual words one at a time while clicking on "play" in the R&W toolbar.
Navigate by lines Supported With Read&Write this is done by unchecking "continuous reading" box in the speech options settings. Then the user selects individual sentences one at a time while clicking on "play" in the R&W toolbar.
Navigate the content by headings Not Supported Read&Write is not designed to navigate content by headings other than by manual moving of reading focus or through the TOC. It is unlikely that the typical R&W user would want to do this.
