This is a product for people with learning challenges such as dyslexia, so no screen reader tests are envisaged. The test sections completed were: Basic functionality, Navigation, Highlights, notes and bookmarks, Visual Adjustments and Read Aloud.
Testing notes include observations from a 17-year-old male with dyslexia who uses other digital reading solutions (Dolphin EasyReader on iPhone 6+ and Edge with Learning Tools on PC).
The lack of support for Table of Contents and other navigation features makes it difficult to recommend this currently as an EPUB reading solution. Some issues were found with changing colors and fonts, which impacted on the user experience. The navigation of the main menu by the keyboard is problematical. The left arrow moves to the right through the menu options when a menu is displayed. The evaluation was completed with keyboard and mouse.
Operating system accessibility
Reading system activation
Navigate to chapters through the Table of Contents
No TOC feature is provided. Moving forward and backwards by selected reading unit is achieved with F4 and shift F2. The utility of the feature in EPUB could be improved.
Navigate content by pages
There is no feature for locating the print equivalent page.
Navigate by reflowed page number
Keyboard shortcut is control G. The title content is presented in a scrolling viewport. The next screen is displayed with PgDn. Moving to the next “page” is actually the next document. The keyboard shortcuts for next or previous are ctrl and E or R.
Read navigation information
The current index of the document in the titles is shown (displayed as page number). Navigation information (such as progress through title, or chapter name) is not displayed.
This is achieved using F7 (bigger) and F8 (smaller)
Change background and foreground color
This is achieved via Tools/Settings/Text/Colors. A pallet is offered from which the text color, background and highlighting attributes are chosen. The changes are not applied immediately, it is necessary to switch in and out of the current title.
This is achieved using the OS setting for display, or on the external monitor if used.
Apply high contrast system configuration
High contrast setting changes the menus and dialogs (such as open file, settings). The general UI and content area is unaffected.
Magnify the User Interface(UI)
This behaved as expected.
This is achieved via Tools/Settings/Text/Font. The changes are not applied immediately, it is necessary to switch in and out of the current title.
The Read Aloud feature should continue until interrupted by the user
When the read aloud reaches the end of the currently loaded document it continues as expected to the next in the title.
All text should be read in the proper order
The text was read in the correct order.
Change Read Aloud reading speed
This is possible using F11 (faster) and F12 (slower).
Text to Speech handles punctuations and document structure appropriately
The speech behaves as expected.
Text is emphasised as it is spoken by read aloud
There are different options provided for the visual emphasis of the text being read aloud.
The emphasis or highlight colour can be changed
This is achieved via Tools/Settings/Text/Colors. A pallet is offered from which the highlighting attributes are chosen. The changes are not applied immediately, it is necessary to switch in and out of the current title.
